今年も学内英語スピーチコンテストが開催されました

全国的にインフルエンザが猛威を振るうこの冬、本校も、生徒ばかりでなく教職員にも複数の罹患者を出し、1月末には全校休校の運びとなりました。KIHSのビッグイベントであるスピーチコンテストも一時はその開催が危ぶまれましたが、当初の予定通り、去る2月3日、無事に終えることができました。

とはいえ、各レベル代表の中にも、前日まで欠席していたり、当日も体調が万全ではない生徒もあり、出場者全員がベストコンディションで本番に臨んだわけではありません。そのような状況でも皆熱意を持って発表を行い、聴衆を十分に引き付けてくれました。ここまでのスピーチを作り上げるには各人の並々ならぬ努力があったことと思います。本番前の数日間には、各レベルのクラス内でリハーサルを行い、その際に、ともに学ぶ友人たちから温かいアドバイスをもらったことも、それぞれのスピーチのクオリティーを高める上で大きく役に立ったようです。

いつもながら思うことですが、KIHSの生徒たちは仲間を思いやる気持ちが強く、お互いを支え合おうとする姿勢には大変素晴らしいものがあります。毎年、コンテスト当日はもちろんですが、そこに至るまでに授業内でお互いを応援し合う様子を見ることも、私たち教員にとっての喜びの一つです。また、今回は残念ながらコンテスト出場はならなかったものの、出来れば皆の前で披露して欲しいスピーチが他にもあったことを加えてお伝えいたします。

当日行われた発表は、さすがに全校生徒の代表だけあっていずれも甲乙つけがたく、ジャッジ団は結論を出すのに大変手間取りました。生徒の投票得点、審査員である英語科教員の投票得点を基に議論を行い、予定よりも長い審査時間を費やすこととなりました。例年通り1～3位の受賞者と、今年度新設されたレベル1～3の発表者内から選ばれる特別賞の受賞者を決定しましたが、その4名に絞り込むことは私たちにとって大変悩ましいタスクでありました。

毎年冬の恒例であるKIHSスピーチコンテスト、今後も寒さを吹き飛ばす熱い行事であり続けるよう願っています。

以下、今回優勝した1年生で英語クラスレベル3の佐野葉月さんのスピーチ全文です。

Our goal of life

Hazuki Sano

 I’ve studied Italian since this summer because I wanted to be able to speak a new language. It has only been 5 months but I recognized the differences between the culture of Japan and Italy. There are a lot of differences but I was especially surprised about the Italian’s style of working. First, some of them enjoy having a drink at lunch time. Second they go back to their home to eat a meal with their family in the middle of the day. After eating, they take a nap. It’s called “siesta”. They treasure time with their family,

How about Japan? Workers work very hard by cutting down their hours of sleep. Some investigations say they work 50 hours overtime in a month on the average. Some of them work more than 150 hours overtime. It causes sickness, depression and death. It’s crazy!

I Know Japanese GDP is high-ranking. At the same time, the number of suicides is high-ranking too. I learned the idea from The United Nations called “Decent Work”. It means that work should be rewarding for people. The teacher said “I think it cannot be realized.” I couldn’t decide whether I agree with it or not. I understood his thought. Some jobs are too hard, but they are needed in everyone’s life. I think we should run toward prosperity. However, are those things first priority than people’s health? The answer is “No”. In short, the most important thing is people.

A friend of mine worked for a big famous company as a CM planner. His job was unbelievably hard. He often worked all night. He had a holiday only once a month. Although he loves his job, his friends, family and I were very worried about him. His family urged him to stop working. Finally, he quit the company because he became sick. Now he works at a smaller company. He is always smiling and says “I hesitated about changing my job. But my decision was right. I enjoy time with my family and friends”.

When you concentrate on your daily tasks too much, please ask yourself. “Why do I work?” “What is my goal in my life?” “What is the most important for me?” I’m sure we should get the answers “I want to make my family and myself smile”
